{"id":547,"date":"2015-01-17T17:27:12","date_gmt":"2015-01-18T01:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iwitnessings.com\/writings\/?p=547"},"modified":"2020-03-26T09:30:49","modified_gmt":"2020-03-26T17:30:49","slug":"slow-witnessing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.iwitnessings.com\/writings\/2015\/01\/17\/slow-witnessing\/","title":{"rendered":"Slow Witnessing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Egads&#8230; a book review&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Doomsday Book :\u00a0<\/strong><em>Connie Willis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What? \u00a0Science Fiction? \u00a0Time Travel? \u00a014th Century Europe?<\/p>\n<p><em>Wasn&#8217;t that the time of the Black Plague? \u00a0The Blue Illness?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes. \u00a0Yes. \u00a0Yes. \u00a0Yes. \u00a0And yes.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve discovered Connie Willis.. \u00a0sort of like Columbus discovered America. \u00a0Doomsday Book won the Hugo and Nebula in 93. \u00a0She has won 11 Hugos and 7 Nebulas. \u00a0So maybe others have discovered her too. \u00a0But those that like SF respond to my question of Connie Willis and Doomsday Book with puzzled looks.<\/p>\n<p>Doomsday Book is story telling at its best. \u00a0Willis spent over 5 years writing this book and I expect that those who love it as I do, consume it in a very short time.<\/p>\n<p>It is a story of youthful exuberance. \u00a0Of the power of belief, not in a religious fashion, but from a spirituality that shines from within. \u00a0Something that can come from within formal religion and from outside it. \u00a0It is both joyous and heartbreaking.<\/p>\n<p>I witnessed this book. \u00a0I don&#8217;t say this about books.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-neil<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Egads&#8230; a book review&#8230; Doomsday Book :\u00a0Connie Willis What? \u00a0Science Fiction? \u00a0Time Travel? \u00a014th Century Europe?
